The art of the bounceback
Let’s talk about the bounce back rate.
It’s simple, but powerful and changes the way you live and experience your whole life.
Your bounce back rate is how quickly you can return to your baseline state of equilibrium after facing challenges or disappointments. It is the time from the trigger/perceived failure/disappointment/heartbreak/ back to baseline level.
As an example, when I was younger and had my first breakup, it took me a whole year to recover from a yearlong relationship—that isn’t really a bounce back. Now, I spend much less time in victim mode, in sadness… I feel my feelings, but I don’t wallow or identify with them.
We feel it—truly and fully and then commit to going back to living the life we love.
So, you might be asking: why do we need to practice bouncing back anyway?
Well, when we start to become more conscious in the moments when life shakes us—when we feel so scared, uncertain, or maybe even angry—we start to take back our power.
Instead of squandering our energy in the emotions of fear or lack, we call that energy back to us. We strengthen our organism (our body) instead of weakening it.
Here’s an example of how you might practice this: In relationships, it’s not about never fighting, but about how fast you can return to a place of love and understanding. It’s having the self-awareness to say:
“OK, I’m really triggered right now, and every ounce of my being wants to bite their head off, but I’m going to take a big deep breath instead. I’m going to calmly express how I am feeling to my partner, while also asking myself how I’m contributing to this situation.”
When we practice shortening our bounceback rate, something really spiritual happens. We actually start to surrender more to the flow of life.
We start to see setbacks or tough situations in a different light. We may not like what is happening to us, but we start to BELIEVE and TRUST that these disappointments are for our highest good. They are leading us to something BIGGER and BETTER than we could have ever imagined for ourselves. We start to put our faith in God and stop trying to control every little thing.
Of course, this is much easier said than done (LOL), so please be extremely gentle and kind with yourself as you navigate rock bottoms, detours, and the natural ebbs and flows of life.
This doesn’t mean swallowing your feelings and putting on a fake happy face through life’s hardest moments. It means to feel the feelings that come up, honor them, and then let them go; trust a higher power is holding you!
